The u4energy project was one of the European Commission’s most ambitious energy education initiatives — a pan-European competition that challenged schools across EU member states to become pioneers of energy efficiency and inspire their communities to reduce energy consumption.
Launched under the Intelligent Energy Europe programme and coordinated by European Schoolnet, u4energy (short for Using 4 Energy) ran two editions of its school competition, engaging thousands of students, teachers and school administrators across Europe in hands-on energy efficiency projects.
The Origins of u4energy
The project emerged from a clear policy need. The European Union had set ambitious energy and climate targets for 2020 — reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, improving energy efficiency by 20% and sourcing 20% of energy from renewables, collectively known as the 20-20-20 targets. Reaching those targets required not just industrial transformation, but a fundamental shift in how European citizens understood and used energy.
Schools were identified as uniquely powerful leverage points: they are both significant energy consumers and the place where the next generation of European citizens forms their habits and values.
U4energy addressed both dimensions simultaneously. By challenging schools to audit their own energy consumption, implement efficiency measures and document the results, the project turned educational institutions into living laboratories of sustainability — and students into advocates for energy efficiency within their families and communities.
How the Competition Worked
The u4energy school competition invited schools from all EU member states to participate in a structured programme with three main phases:
Phase 1 — Energy audit. Schools carried out a baseline assessment of their energy consumption: electricity, heating, cooling and hot water. Students were directly involved in the auditing process, learning to read energy meters, identify sources of waste and calculate the school’s carbon footprint.
Phase 2 — Implementing measures. Based on the audit results, schools designed and implemented practical energy efficiency measures. These ranged from simple behavioural changes — switching off lights and heating in unused rooms — to more substantial technical interventions like insulation improvements, LED lighting upgrades or the installation of solar panels.
Phase 3 — Documenting and sharing results. Schools submitted their projects to national juries, documenting the energy savings achieved and the methods used. The best national projects advanced to the European level, where an independent jury selected the winners.
The competition recognised not just the schools that achieved the largest absolute energy savings, but those that demonstrated the most innovative approaches, the strongest student involvement and the most effective community outreach.
The Legacy of u4energy
When the project concluded, it left behind a body of knowledge, a network of engaged schools and — crucially — a set of documented best practices that educators and policymakers across Europe continue to reference.
The project demonstrated something that data alone rarely communicates: that students, when given the tools and the mandate, can become effective agents of energy transition. Schools that participated in u4energy reported lasting changes in energy culture — students continued monitoring consumption, teachers integrated energy literacy into curricula, and several schools went on to implement renewable energy installations partly inspired by their competition experience.
Why u4energy Matters More Than Ever Today
The energy context has changed dramatically since u4energy ran its competitions. The EU’s European Green Deal targets a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The REPowerEU plan — launched in response to the energy security crisis of 2022 — has accelerated the push for energy efficiency and renewable deployment across the continent.
The European Commission’s energy programmes now invest billions in the energy transition. But the behavioural and educational dimension that u4energy pioneered remains as relevant as ever: technology alone cannot deliver the transition. It requires informed, engaged citizens — and that formation begins in schools.
